Pink Diamonds
Pink
diamonds have long been heralded as one of the most sought after of all gemstones.
Pink diamonds are also one of the rarest of all gemstones, and one of the
most expensive of all gemstones.
The rarity of pink diamonds makes them extremely expensive. Pink diamonds
are much rarer than white diamonds, with only a very small number
of pink diamonds being mined each year. Natural pink diamonds are therefore
significantly more expensive than white diamonds.
The rarity and scarcity of pink diamonds and their significantly higher price
than their white diamond counterparts, makes pink diamonds out of reach of
most jewellery lovers.
There is an affordable alternative to pink diamonds that many ladies now choose - the
pink sapphire. See more about pink sapphires below.

Pink sapphires are a form of gemstone called corundum.
Pure pink sapphires are
coloured by very small quantities of chromium.
As the chromium content increases,
the colour of a sapphire can vary from pale pink, to deep pink through to
near red (where after they are called rubies - red sapphires).
Sapphires of all colours are very hard gemstones. They are second, only to diamonds, as the hardest natural substance in the world. Pink sapphires are suitable to be worn in engagement rings, wedding rings, dress rings, earrings, pendants and bracelets.

What are Pink Diamonds?
Diamonds naturally occur in a range of colours including white, yellow,
champagne or cognac, brown, black and pink. Of all of the natural diamond
colours, pink is the rarest colour. Pink is far more rare than
all of the other natural diamond colours.
Natural pink diamonds are natural diamonds that are mined from the ground.
Pink diamonds with a natural pink colour are found in the ground
with that pink colour.
Pink diamonds are only mined in one place the in the world, the Argyle
diamond mine in Australia. The Argyle diamond mine mines only a very small
number of large pink diamonds each year, with most of the those pink diamonds
being exported to prestigious international jewellery stores that
specialise in rare fancy colour diamonds.

Pink diamonds can be either a natural pink diamond, that also has a natural pink colour, or they can be a natural diamond that has been treated to create the pink colour, or they can be man-made pink diamonds.
Natural Pink Diamonds: Natural diamonds that are naturally pink, that is, they are found in the ground with a natural pink colour are very rare and have a much higher price than irradiated pink diamonds and man-made pink diamonds.
Irradiated pink diamonds: Natural diamonds (ie. diamonds that have been mined from the earth) which are then treated to create the pink colour are called irradiated pink diamonds. Irradiated pink diamonds are still genuine diamonds, however, their pink colour is not the natural colour that the present in the diamond when it was mined.
Man-made pink diamonds are diamonds which have been entirely created in a sophisticated diamond laboratory. Man-made pink diamonds are made using the exact same constituents as those found in natural diamonds, however, the man-made pink diamonds are created in a lab rather than mined from the earth. The man-made pink diamonds are the most affordable option.
Pink diamonds with natural pink colour naturally occur in pale pink
colours, through to dark pink colours, though they are mostly
found in pale pink.
Naturally pink diamonds will be advertised as natural pink diamonds. Diamonds
that have been irradiated to create the pink colour should be referred
to by jewellers as irradiated pink diamonds or treated pink diamonds. Man-made pink diamonds should be referred to as man-made or synthetic pink diamonds.
If you view a diamond that is not clearly labeled as either a natural pink
or irradiated pink or man-made pink diamond, you should always ask the jeweller for clarification and confirmation as to the type of pink diamond it is.
How to clean your Pink Sapphire Jewellery
General care for sapphire jewellery is very important. Jewellery should
not be stored together since it can be scratched or tangled. Sapphire jewellery
should never be worn while doing heavy or manual work.
Visiting your jeweller a minimum of once a year is highly recommended. The jeweller will give your jewellery a professional clean and check that the setting is secure.
You can clean your jewellery at home between visits. There are three easy ways to clean jewellery.
- Prepare a small bowl of warm sudsy water with a mild liquid detergent. Gently brush the jewellery with a soft toothbrush while it is in the suds. Then rinse each piece under warm running water. Pat dry with a soft lint-free cloth.
- In a small bowl, soak the jewellery in a half-and-half solution of cold water and household ammonia for thirty minutes. Lift out and gently tap around the front and back of the mounting with a small soft brush. Swish in the solution a second time, rinse and drain on tissue paper.
- Use a brand name liquid jewellery cleaner and follow the instructions given on the label.
